Root Priveleges in WAMP

I recently decided the MS Web Matrix I was running as my development server didn’t provide everything I wanted in a development server. For one thing, I could not access phpMyAdmin.  I read the docs, searched the forums, the usual “seek and you shall not find”  undertaking.

I decided to try  WAMP. -  Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP.  I like it. The config files were easy to locate, Apache and MySQL started without fail. But when I tried to start phpMyAdmin, I received a #1045 error: root@localhost: access denied.

I checked and rechecked of all of the options in all of the configuration files…EasyPHP, Apache, PHP Extension, PHP, MySQL, and PHPMyAdmin.

EasyPHP-5.3.9         EasyPHP-5.3.9

I found something that worked, although it may not be the correct solution. In the “home” directory is an .htaccess file that has 3 lines:

Order deny,allow
allow from 127.0.0.1
allow from all

Only when I looked at it, the last line said “deny from all.” So I changed it to “allow from all”.  Save it, started phpMyAdmin, and was able to get into PHPMyAdmin with user root.

I’ve had no problems since, and I like working with WAMP. Its everything I need in a development server.

iPhone 4s Rotation Lock

The Good and The Bad

The great thing about Apple is their ability to develop outstanding devices like the iPhone and the iPod. The bad thing about Apple is their inability to provide easy-to-find answers for managing these devices.  Doing an online search for a simple task seems to display page after page of information that has nothing to do with what you are looking for.

Locking Rotation for iOS4 and iOS5 Devices

If you are looking for a way to prevent rotation, here is the secret:

  • Double-click the Home button until the multi-tasking bar pops up on the bottom
  • Swipe to the right until it stops
  • Now you will see a round arrow icon on the left; pressing it will lock the screen rotation until you unlock it

DOMAIN APPRAISAL SCAM ALERT

Domain Appraisal Scam

I just got scammed. I hate to admit it, but at this point the only thing I can do is post the details and hope it will prevent others from falling for this particular SCAM and losing money. If you are in the market for selling your domains, go no further until you read this.

I listed a couple of my domains on the GoDaddy auction site. Relatively simply and inexpensive – $4.99 for the auction membership. The very next day I received an email from martensen@domaininvestshop.com. The email in summary said the sender was going to purchase my domain, and asked me what I wanted for my domain. The email was signed Jerad Martensen of Domain Investing Inc.

————————————————————————————————————————
It sounded professional, but since the email said my domain was as good as sold the red flag went up. I replied, and asked where they learned about my domain names. The reply was from Martensen [mailto:martensen@domaininvestshop.com].  They offered $8,000 USD for my domain, and asked what I thought about that price. ( I thought I must be dreaming)

Then they told me without a domain appraisal they couldn’t confirm the price, and that the appraisal had to come from a manual appraisal company, and they refer me to a blog at http://www.thenamepros.com/Archive/94140683.htm that they themselves have posted, although I don’t know it at the time and I still haven’t connected the dots. They go on asking me questions about content and domain, or just domain; either way is fine with them, and what is my preferred method of payment.

I reply  and ask them again where they have seen my domains for sale.

The reply ignores my question, and talks more about domain appraisals. They will not accept $14.00 appraisals, and they mention a site that charges $200 per appraisal, and then certiefieddomainvalue.com, which charges about $50.00 per appraisal, and they provide me with a link.

The dollar signs clouded my judgement, and I ordered a domain appraisal. It came back in 24 hours for $8,000.00. But when I notified Martensen that the appraisal was in, he said his buyer backed out. That is when I did the research and found Martensen and domaininvestshop.com and certifieddomainvalue.com on every scam board I looked at.

While I was taking every precaution to protect my domains, they were scamming me on the appraisal. If you have domains for sale and get emails from anyone at domaininvestshop.com, delete them, and don’t believe any of what they are telling you about getting them appraised at certifieddomainvalue.com
